APPLICATIONS. Ideal for use in home offices, classrooms, craft rooms.
There are no markings on parts and no dimensions of each part so it takes a bit of time to sort them out. No screws it is just held together with dowels that are pre glued. NOTE: the glue is blue and it will stain whatever it gets on. You have to soak them in water but the manual does not say how long to leave in water. My first thought is it is way to high price for how it is made . . . But when I looked at cardboard units for $70 maybe $166 is not too bad as it is more like furniture and does seem pretty solid. It is flexible as well, you can put the shelves in any way you want them. These cubbies are absolutely adorable. They look lovely in my classroom. Love the size, color, and little drawers the bottom. I knew they were speedier but I decided to finally treat myself.I had done my research and the reviews were pretty comparable between my final choices. I’m stating to regret basing my purchase on beauty. To begin with, they were an absolute pain to put together- and I had very knowledgeable help. The pieces were not labeled and the directions were not super clear. It was more helpful to read the reviews left by others. There were also sooooooooo many little pieces. Thanks for the tips about wearing gloves!Overall the unit is sturdy, but the actual cubbies are not. The particle board just rests on the pegs, so the backs flip up and the items spill out with typical young children use. They also pull straight out when students try to remove things. The lack of stability also makes it impossible to store anything larger than a typical sheet of paper. When I tried to curl student folders inside, the boards came out or folders refused to fit into small spaces. They aren’t anywhere near as handy as my not-as-cute 17-year-old previous set I’m wishing I would have saved. If you are using them for light storage or adults, then go for it. They are really pretty. I don’t recommend for classrooms with young students.Small boards do not stay on the pegs. With a busy family life, this is a wonderful organizational Tool. Kids are involved in sports year round, scouting, and school/summer activities. Keeping the various info in folders was not working for me or the kids. My husband never thought we would fill up all 32 slots. We did and could probably have gone bigger but this works for the moment. I keep it against the wall on my home office desk. Used a label to identify which slots were for which activities. We have a couple small rocks with red ribbons attached that the kids use to identify items in need if my or Dad's immediate attention (i.e. permission slips, etc.). This unit has helped me keep my desk and my family organized. Things are no longer buried on the kitchen counter. (retraining the kids is another story)Up side:* The two drawers are very handy! They are nice/wide and hold some of the smaller drawer organizers I found at the local office supply chain. We use them for our backup of general office supplies like pencils, highlighters, tape, scissors, calculators, compasses, glue sticks, etc.* Shelves/slots hold most books well. The papers from school fit perfectly. Slots are fairly stable/sturdy for the price of the unit.* Drawers are not shakey and ride independantly on the bottom base of the unit.* Most of the dowels come pre-treated with water-activated glue... so all you need to do is dip them in water and install.* External surface is veneer over particle board. Was stable during construction and as well as the move into place on my desk. Now it doesn't get much challenge to structural integrity as it sits undisturbed on my desk.Down side:* it probably took me an hour to put it together... yes and there were some extra parts.* the slot shelves are fairly stable with bars in the front plus a small bar to keep the slots from sliding and in back for the shelf to rest on. This is stable enough but removing the items in each shelf requires a bit more control.*slots are jut a schosch too small for the manilla folders.* Glue that comes with the unit for non pre-glued unitsIn answer to the final question. Yes I would definately buy this again.I was pleased to receive such a good deal on the sale price of this unit. A fellow teacher paid as much for a cardboard unit from the educational supply company, Really Good Stuff. The Safco unit arrived in just 2 days. It is indeed a heavy unit made of composite materials.I misunderstood the definition of "Safco Model Oak Wood". I thought the word "model" was modifying Safco as in "Safco Model"; it seems to modify "Oak" as in "Model Oak" because at the regular $203.00 price, I was expecting solid oak rather than oak-grain-printed plastic covering composite material - is that called "model oak" now? Some of the cut (joint) edges were slightly chipped and peeled as happens with composites, but the outside visible edges look fine and hopefully will endure classroom treatment when nicked or scratched. The pre-drilled holes lined up well. A little problem with the drawer joints matching up, but not bad - I think the drawer bottom was off a bit. One bottom corner of one drawer face extends lower then the runner and might chip away the bottom shelf it comes in contact with as the drawer is closed; it's off by a 16th" or so, but I will remedy that with piece of Teflon tape bridging from the bottom of the drawer face to the bottom of the side runner.I recommend the product despite my cabinet-making perfectionism. I couldn't have built it for less.
